Cucurbita pepo ssp. pepo
Botanically zucchini belong to the Cucurbitaceae and hence are included as part of the edible pumpkins family. Sometimes a distinction is made between summer and winter squashes and pumpkins. Soft-shelled pumpkins would be considered as summer squash, just as the group of zucchini - in contrast to the thick-skinned pumpkins, that can be stored during all winter and beyond.
In addition to various green zucchini there are varieties with yellow peel, such as the highly resistant breeding 'Gold Rush’. The bright yellow, club-shaped fruits have fine skin and a very delicate taste.
